Metaphors;

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” (116)

“You are too young to understand it,” she said, “but sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of –oh, of your father.” (50)

"Your name's longer'n you are. Bet it's a foot longer" (7)

Imagery;

"Miss Maudie hated her house: time spent indoors was time wasted. She was a widow, a chameleon lady who worked in her flower beds in an old straw hat and men's coveralls, but after her five o'clock bath, she would appear on the porch and reign over the street in magisterial beauty" (47)

“Just as the birds know where to go when it rains, I knew when there was trouble in our street.”
