how and why were the radleys set apart from the rest of maycomb?

The Radleys weren't away per se, they kept themselves separate because of family history and things that had happened. Because they kept themselves locked away from society they became a curiosity, and over time stories were built around it. Their home is even treated like the town's haunted mansion.
