How are the toys in the box visual symbols of what happens later in the movie to kill a mockingbird?

This is an interesting question, no doubt, and there is a book by Harold Bloom that deals with it in detail. According to Bloom, the toy box represents a way in which the movie can refer back to itself for continuity's sake--much in the same way the story refers back "to time past."
