How did the characters feel in the space the story was set in?

Most of the characters really only knew one space so it is really difficult compare it with something very deferent. Certainly the outlying areas were known but most people didn't travel too much. The story is told from Scout's point of view. She talks about the South and her area's history at the beginning of the novel. She is confounded by her own heritage but thats as far as we get. Scout describes her life in Maycomb as quite idyllic for a young kid. Atticus is more than fantastic as a father while Calpurnia and Ms. Maudie take make great motherly role models. As the book progresses, Scout sees a darker side of her setting. The racism and injustice of the American South creeps up on Scout and Jem. Adults like Atticus and Calpurnia are well aware of the harshness of the setting but do their best to ease and help navigate young Scout and Jem through it.
