Chapter 18
He's being completely polite to her, treating her with quiet words and respect. Atticus feels that due to the life she's led, this is the kindest way to interrogate her, and that maybe he'll get a better response. Mayella unfortunately has no idea how to respond to kindness and believes Atticus is making fun of her.
