Lee uses mataphors and symbols to explain the meaning of life. In this novel we two minor themes, which are surrounded by the use of symbolism and metaphors to help the reader understand.

Loss of innocence, justice, and fair play are at the forefront of this novel. Lee teaches us these moral lessons through the eyes of the children, using symbolism (mockingbirds and even Boo) to explain these themes to the children, but also to enlighten the reader.
