To Kill a Mockingbird
How does Harper Lee use names and titles to communicate something about Maycomb and the South in general?

A good place to start here might be with the bird motif that is present throughout the story. The title, of course, references the mockingbird, while Jem and Scout have the last name Finch. This association with birds seems to point towards the weakness and innocence of small birds that are caught up in the racist nightmare of Maycomb. This juxtaposition makes for the dramatic tension that is so ubiquitous in the story.
