How does Lee create conflict for the reader with respect of seeing Mayella as a sympathetic character by the end of her testimony?

As Mayella's testimony wears on, she continues to attack Tom with obvious lies couched under blatant racist language. She insults the jury and lashes out at Atticus who is clearly treating her with a respect she has never had. Still, Lee never lets us forget that she is as much of a victim as poor Tom Robinson.
