How does Reverend Sykes help the children see and hear the trial? Is he right to do this?

Reverend Sykes brings the children into the balcony and finds them seats. Some people might have found his actions inappropriate, as the balcony was set aside for the black spectators. Reverend Syke's, however, was being kind and looking out for the children.
