It is clear that Atticus didn't like rattling Mayella. He thought that she was just as much a victim as Tom Robinson. Scout says that after Atticus sat down he looked like he had a stomach ache. Atticus could see how much Mayella was hurting and he did his best to protect Mayella while proving Tom's innocence at the same time.
