Cecil Jacobs effect "you can just take that back boy. I realized he wanted me to hear every word he said. (chapter 4)
This incident occurs in chapter 9. Atticus patiently explains to Scout why he is compelled to defend Tom Robinson, even though 'there's been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn't do much about defending this man.' Atticus explains that it is right, fair and just to defend Tom, and that he would lose his integrity if he did not do the job properly. Scout reflects on this message when she faces Cecil Jacobs the next day-
'Somehow, if I fought Cecil I would let Atticus down...I could take being called a coward for him.'
Scout learns to stand up for what is right, even if it is not always comfortable to do so.
