How much does the short scene between Atticus and Mr Cunningham tell you about the lives of the people in Maycomb?

This is in act one. I was wondering if someone could help me with this question.

This tells us that the Great Depression is really hard on the people of Maycomb. Mr. Cunningham is in the midst of an entailment and pays Atticus with some of his crop. Mr. Cunningham is a proud man and refuses charity. Despite having little food, he still pays Atticus what he can.
