Certainly Atticus is able to reason with the mob for a while using morals that appeal to all men. It is Scout that reminds Mr. Cunningham that Atticus has helped him in the past. She also knows Walter and she is his friend. Scout's simple innocence prevails reminding Mr. Cunningham just how badly he is behaving.
