To Kill a Mockingbird
In her lesson on Hitler, Miss Gates says that “we (American people) don't believe in persecuting anyone”. What seems odd to the reader about this claim?

America has a history of persecuting people like blacks, including blacks in the book, and indigenous peoples. Mrs. Gates's statement is even more ironic considering anti-Semitism was widespread before the Americans joined WW2.
