In the last paragraph of page 163, Scout expresses her confusion regarding the town's resentment of Atticus representing Tom. Explain why Scout has difficulty understanding the hostility of Maycomb's residents towards her father.

Atticus is probably the most humane upstanding citizen that Maycomb has ever seen. Scout knows that the very people he helps for little or nothing now condemn him for doing the right thing. Scout and Jem are brought up differently than most other white kids. They do not fully understand the ignorance and hatred which is thrown at their very special father.
