In Chapter Sixteen, the children find out that their father's defense of Tom Robinson is frowned upon by the townspeople.... that it's made people angry, and even put their father in danger. The community was upset for no other reason than Tom Robinson's race. Defending a black man, especially against the charge of sexually assualting a white woman was unheard of, particularly in the south.
