Scout seems to exagerate the idea that her father is old:

One became aware of telltale creases forming under his ears, one noticed not his jet-black hair but the gray patches growing at his temples....He was nearly blind in his left eye, and said left eyes were the tribal curse of the Finch family. Whenever he wanted to see something well, he turned his head and looked from his right eye.
