Both Mayella and her father are ignorant. Mayella, however, has had little choice but to remain ignorant. She simply has not had a chance in life. Mr. Ewell is an ignorant and evil man. Hate is his only refuge in his pathetic life. Mayella is actually her father's ultimate victim. It is implied that Bob has been raping Mayella for years.
