In chapter 21 we are given the verdict of the trial. Jem is sure that Atticus' great work will mean that Tom is found not guilty. He is devastated when the verdict of guilty is handed down. Atticus, however, knew from the beginning that the most they would achieve was recognition that Tom should be treated fairly in court and be properly represented. He knows that the verdict was unlikely to be fair.
