Atticus is defending Tom because it is the right thing to do. He leads by example and wants to show his children that fighting for the right cause, even in certain defeat, is the only thing to do. Real change only comes when people are willing to give up what is important to them for that cause. Atticus took human and civil rights seriously. He had everything to lose but he also upheld an idea of justice and human rights that would resonate with his children and his community regardless of the trial's conclusion.
