This is similar to your last question. In general, Atticus could have done a bad job. Many whites in town, like Bob Ewell, would have expected Atticus to do a bad job on this case on purpose. Atticus, however, was not like most white people ion Maycomb. He knew Bob was innocent and, even though he knew they would likely lose the case because of bigotry, he would sacrifice everything to give Tom a fair trial.
