Calpurnia or "cal" is a strong woman. She is a poor black woman from the Negro district. She seems educated switching vernacular depending where she is. Calpurnia is presented as Scout's nemesis in the beginning but we really see her more as a mother figure as the story progresses. She is fiercely protective of the Finch children and a great support to Atticus.
