What did Atticus mean when he told Scout to delete the adjectives and she would have the facts?

Why does Lee include this conversation in the book? (chapter 7)

Atticus is pointing out that Jem is exaggerating. He wants Scout to understand that although her brother does have a point (in regards to school being pointless until sixth grade), she shouldn't take his words to heart....... just half listen.
