Scout and Jem realize the dark side of their friends and neighbours. Both children are broken hearted over the perversion of justice dealt to Tom Robinson. They both learn that life isn't fair despite the strength of the courts. They learn that "good" doesn't always win over ignorance and fear. Still, they also learn from their father to always stand up for what is right, even if they are going to lose in the end.
