Jem actually cries over the verdict. He has lost faith in his own town. Certainly Jem has a right to feel this way. His father proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Tom was innocent. Still the Jury lacked the courage to do the right thing because of their ingrained racism and ignorance. Jem is sad for his town, for his father, and for humanity.
