What does N.H Lee trying to tell the readers of the book

I believe Lee tried to convey the very important message that we should all do the right thing even if it means we pit ourselves against the opposition of everyone around us. Going along with the crowd is a choice, not an excuse. Standing up for the truth is not simply the right thing to do..... it's the only thing to do.
