what does the term poor white trash mean ?

Poor white trash would refer to a low part of the hierarchy of white society. Frequently this means low income, unemployed, low education and reliance on some sort of social assistance or charity. The people would be white and they would not seem to want to "better" themselves. In the case of the novel, Scout would be referring to the Ewells.
