Scout's presence and congenial conversation disperses the mob. They aren't about to drag Tom out of the jail r harm Atticus in front of her. She makes it all personal.

she actually reminds cunningham of the favor done by atticus to him( the entailment) and b the presence of kids he with the mob leaves.
