What explanation does Atticus give as to why he is neither afraid of Bob Ewell nor willing to fight him or carry a gun?

Atticus feels Ewell is more bark than bite. Atticus will not give Ewell any satisfaction by carrying a gun. Ewell must disappear back into obscurity without changing anyone.
