What happened to Tom in chapter 25and why does it make the children worry about Atticus?

Tom is already dead by Chapter 25. When they go to Helen's house to break the news about Tom, Jem stays in the car. Ewell reacts to Mr. Underwood's editorial defending Tom by saying, “one down and about two more to go.”
