Mr. Underwood has been well known to spout his hatred for blacks, so calling out from the dark in Atticus' defense is a huge surprise. The fact that he is willing to verbally defend Atticus and Tom against the lynch mob sets him aside from the majority of the community. He doesn't hide his feelings, but in his own eyes justice comes before race.
