Crazy old lady comes to mind but it goes a little deeper than this. Scout describes her, "Jem and I hated her. If she was on the porch when we passed, we would be raked by her wrathful gaze...." Neighbours avoid or ignore her. Lost in a cloud of narcotic bliss, Mrs. Dubose dished out a regular stream of vitriol to Scout and Jem. One can assume she was no different to anyone else. Ironically the only person who treats her with respect is Atticus; the man she thinks defends "niggers". Fortunately Atticus knows that behind the words and drugs is a tired and very sad old lady.
