"Besides skin colour, Lee uses light and dark to reflect mood, tone and hope. Tom is in a dark cell. It is also dark outside. Atticus brings a solitary lamp, it represents a beacon of hope in a figuratively and literally dark time. The darkness is the ignorance of hate, and the small light is the wisdom of equality and what is right."
