Atticus used to be home more but now Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra must take over much of the care. Although Atticus won't admit it openly, he thinks that have a chance at the Tom Robinson trial even though he has been disappointed in his town as of late.

Throughout the novel, Atticus has been described as a patient man. However, in chapter 16, the change (subtle) Scout noticed, is the irritation Atticus gains due to Aunt Alexandra's racist remarks, towards Calpurnia, which is much unlike himself. This probably is because Atticus is under a lot of pressure by this time involving Tom Robinson's case and the only thing his sister seems to be doing is making the situation worse, by adding more pressure onto his nerves.
