The theme of picking your battles is evident in chapter 9. Cecil Jacobs tells Scout that her father is a "nigger lover". Scout punches him in the face. Although most readers, including myself, will see this as sweet justice, Atticus is able to make Scout understand that there are far greater battles to choose from than the taunting of a child.
