Atticus tells Scout that they are indeed poor but not as poor as the Cunninghams. He says that farmers like the Cunninghams were hit hardest by the stock market crash.This meant that everyone except perhaps the filthy rich lost all of their savings. Atticus and his family were better off than the Cunninghams in that they could feed themselves, have descent shelter....
