Why did Atticus let Tom run away from the courthouse?

Question

Why couldn't he just told Tom to stay in the room? Atticus made a pretty big mistake there.

Atticus was not present when he ran away. Tom ran away after the court proceedings.

Atticus was not present at the time. So he let him run away.
