Why does Jem show concern for Miss Maudie, and what is his solution? What does his solution infer about Maycomb society?

Miss Maudie's house burns down in chapter 8. Miss. Maudie was outside clearing things in the cold. Jem suggests that Miss. Maudie get a coloured man to do the work for her. Jem isn't trying to be offensive. Generally black people worked for white people in Maycomb.

“You’ve ruined ‘em,” said Jem. “Why don’t you get a colored man?” There was no note of sacrifice in his voice when he added, “Or Scout’n’me, we can help you.”
