Atticus is an outsider in Maycomb by virtue of his education level, progressive viewpoints, a singular empathetic intelligence. Atticus is more educated than most people in Maycomb. He believes in the law and has a keen sense of right and wrong. Atticus has his own moral compass that is not part of the old Southern tradition of the United States. He teaches and leads by example. He takes on the Tom Robinson case because it is simply the right thing to do.
