To Kill a Mockingbird

Why is it so important that the jury has not returned by eleven that night?

In To Kill a Mockingbird chapter Twenty-One, the night of trial.

The length of time the jury deliberated made people believe that possibly the jury would return a verdict of innocent. Usually, a guilty verdict comes back quickly without a lot of deliberation.
