Why is Jem's decision signifiant to Scout? In what way do they "part ways" at this moment?

Jem has reached a point where he doesn't want to disappoint his father by his actions. Scout is still all about the adventure, but Jem is growing up and coming to undertand that there are repuecussions to his actions.
