Why were Tom Robinson's choices in the situation of that November evening so threatening and and so unfair in To Kill a Mockingbird?

When Mayella corners Tom he tries to make all the right decision, knowing what will happen in he doesn't. Unfortunately, he didn't have to do a thing..... whether he'd stayed and faced Ewell after he came in the door, or whether he ran...... which he did..... he was sunk.
