at what point of the book does Cole start to mature?

I think after the mauling by the Spirit Bear, Cole begins to change. I would consider around Chapter 13 as when Cole actually begins to contemplate his actions and become a dynamic character. It really takes the bear almost killing him for Cole to begin to see truth.
