Bear on Totem Pole

We are reading Touching Spirit Bear in our Grade 11 classroom. In chapter 27 the author says that Peter destroyed the Bear carving on the Totem. In the book it does not say that he carved a bear. Did we just miss this?

I think Cole carved the whole totem pole so he must have carved the bear.
