Cole begins to consider how all life is interconnected. The dead sparrows have a great affect on him. Cole wonders if the sparrows " so frail, helpless and innocent" deserved to die. Then he wonders why they deserved to live? Cole begins to contemplate his own significance or rather insignificance in the grand scheme of things. Cole begins to lose his sense of entitlement and think of the world as pieces of a larger organism. Cole begins to understand that he can try to contribute to it or hurt it.
