How do the ingredients and the small animal connect in Touching Spirit Bear?

Cole doesn't understand that each and every living creature is connected in one way or another. To kill something just to kill it, removes Cole from the circle of life. The groceries they choose (list of ingredients) are nothing special on their own, but when you put them together, dessert is terrific. This in itself, can be compared to Cole's treatment of animals. For him to kill the animal simply because he's hungry is nothing more than control of another creature. The problem is he has no control over himself. If he can't control and respect himself, he can never be respected.
