how does cole feel about banishment being a punishment

Cole acts as if he does not want to go to jail, so he thinks his banishment to the island, for awhile, will be preferable to going to jail. He realizes at some level that he has very few chances left before he will, in fact, die and that he has to deal with some of his issues, especially his anger and his inability to control that. Once he is on the island, his anger get away from him and causes him to make many mistakes which nearly cost him his life.
