How does Cole use his background knowledge to survive?

Initially Cole doesn't have a lot of background knowledge for Alaskan wilderness survival. Cole is a tough kid. He thinks he can swim from island to island but finds out how futile this is pretty quickly. Most of what he learns happens on his first trip. He uses this knowledge on his second trip to the island.
