How does Cole’s plan to escape the island reflect on his mental state?

Cole plans to break the tide and swim to a nearby island then catch a ride to civilization. This clearly shows a few things about Cole:

- He is not ready to to take responsibility or work on himself. He is still trying to cheat the system.

-Cole has no idea about nature's power. He could not break tide and if he did, the fridgid waters would kill him.
