how would the novel have changed if peter had succeeded in his suicide attempt? Would Cole have ever found peace?

I think Cole's journey would have been even harder and longer had Peter killed himself. The guilt would have compounded Cole's anger against himself and the world. I think Cole would never fully forgive himself but he would have eventually come to terms with his guilt. Cole would probably try to help others to appease his guilt over Peter's death.
